Smørrebrød – A Unique Danish Food Experience
Restaurant Kronborg
Smørrebrød is a classic Danish specialty that has been an important part of Danish food culture for centuries. It consists of a slice of rye bread topped with various ingredients and beautifully decorated with fresh garnishes.
Smørrebrød is enjoyed by people from all backgrounds and is a key part of lunch – but it is also served on special occasions and is becoming increasingly popular as a dinner option.
The History of Smørrebrød
Restaurant Kronborg
In the 1800s, smørrebrød became a regular part of the Danish diet. Rye bread – a dark, dense, and nutritious bread made from rye flour – was used as the base because it was both healthy and long-lasting. Smørrebrød toppings vary widely, from fish and seafood to different types of meat, often layered and garnished with vegetables, fresh herbs, mayonnaise, or remoulade.
Smørrebrød can be very simple, such as a slice of rye bread with cheese or sausage, but it can also be more refined with multiple layers and artistic decoration. This more elegant version is what has made smørrebrød famous in Denmark and internationally.

One of Copenhagen’s best classic smørrebrød restaurants, fine selection of homemade schnapps and, not least, fantastic service from the staff – attentive, humorous and full of personality.

Super good breakfast place. The food was absolutely perfect and top quality. I dropped my fish fillet on the floor, but the good waiter immediately brought a new one. It was service at a high level! See you again soon!

Super lunch cafe with classic smørrebrød and with a positive twist of something new. So delicious, sweet service and always nicely covered. Toilets are nice. The restaurant is highly recommended.

Smørrebrød in Danish Culture
Restaurant Kronborg
Smørrebrød has long held a special place in Danish culture and has played an important role in celebrations like weddings and holidays.
In the past, when most Danes worked in agriculture, farmers and laborers needed a filling and easy-to-carry meal. Rye bread was both affordable and rich in energy, making it the perfect choice as the base for this iconic dish.
That is why you will not find dishes like mixed salads, fried potatoes, French fries, or other typical café-style meals when enjoying traditional Danish smørrebrød.
How to Enjoy Smørrebrød
Restaurant Kronborg
If you visit a Danish smørrebrød restaurant for lunch, you will typically choose 2-3 pieces of smørrebrød, which is usually a good portion for most people. In our restaurant, we serve smørrebrød all day, so you also have the opportunity to enjoy it for dinner.
If you are invited to a traditional Danish Sunday lunch with a family, you will experience an even larger selection than what is typically offered in a restaurant. We have carefully selected a wide variety of smørrebrød so you can taste different versions and find your favorites.
We recommend starting with two pieces of smørrebrød per person, served one at a time – just like in a classic dinner, where each dish is enjoyed separately.

Traditional Serving Order
Restaurant Kronborg
According to tradition, a smørrebrød meal begins with fish or seafood. If herring is part of the menu, it is always served first. Next comes poultry or meat, which can be served on either rye bread or white bread.
You are free to choose two pieces with fish, two with meat, or a combination – the most important thing is to enjoy what you like best. We make sure it is served in the traditional way.
Depending on the type of smørrebrød, it may be served directly on the bread or with the bread on the side. Butter or lard is often included to enhance the flavors of certain dishes.
The Perfect Ending to the Meal
Restaurant Kronborg
A traditional smørrebrød lunch often ends with cheese. The meal is typically accompanied by a cold beer and schnapps, but in recent years, wine has also become a popular choice. The meal is often finished with a cup of coffee and a small dessert.
Enjoy your meal – and welcome to a true Danish food experience!
